I am Suzanne Ashurst, I have twin girls at Castleside, called Millie and Ruby, who are just starting their school journey. When the girls first started reception, I was working 4 days a week as a HR Business Partner for a global security company, then I decided that with my 20 years + HR experience, I could do it for myself, so I set up my own HR consultancy support to small and medium businesses across the North East. In doing this, it has allowed me to spend more time with my girls but has also given me the opportunity to take a greater interest in their school life and education, as I realised that I probably didn’t know as much as I should.
I was approached about becoming a Parent Governor role, I didn’t really know what this meant, I thought perhaps I could change the colour of the school jumper, or be someone that other parents could talk to about issues, but I was wrong, it’s not about that at all. It’s about working in partnership with the headteacher on all aspects which relate to the education of our children in the school, it is about the vision for the school, where do we want to be, how will we get the there and most of all ensuring that the children are happy and supported at all time.
My skills in HR may come in handy and my business experience, but overall it is my role as a parent that will help me develop in this role as we progress forward, which is very exciting!
