Welcome to Year 1
Our class teacher is Mr Robson and our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Franklin. We hope that you find all of the information here useful.
In Year 1 we believe that play is an important part of children’s learning. We have lots of things planned but we ensure that children are also given time to access the continuous provision in and outside the classroom during every lesson. Staff also work in the provision with children to ensure they are getting the best out of their time in class and are suitably challenged.
English in Year 1
In English this year we will be developing the skills learned in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We will be have a strong focus on early reading through phonics, working towards the Phonics Screening Check in June. Children have daily phonics sessions and our daily reading carousel. We will also be looking at a range of other texts and books to help develop children’s writing.
Reading in Year 1
All of the children are encouraged to read daily and to foster a love of reading, choosing to do it for pleasure. Books are shared regularly and celebrated in class. Children are rewarded for reading at home or with an adult with Class Dojos.
- Our class texts this half-term are Beegu, Aliens Love Underpants and The Way Back Home.
- Mr Robson is currently reading ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins.
- Mrs Franklin is currently reading ‘The Witcher’ by Andrzej Sapowski.
Maths in Year 1
The main focus of maths in our school is to ensure pupils develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving as stated in the National Curriculum. In Year 1, there will be a strong focus on using practical resources. Once the children have developed their fluency in various areas of maths, they are challenged to apply these skills to problem-solving and reasoning questions. Children will have the opportunity to practise a range of skills in their daily maths lessons.
How can you help at home?
All year we will be developing our phonic knowledge in preparation for our phonic screening check in June 2020. Below are some websites that you might like to encourage your children to play on.
Homework will be sent home in a grid for the term. Each week you should complete one activity for the following Friday.
Our Learning Journey
Year 1 and year 6 had some pumpkin fun. Year 1 created some designs and with the help of year 6 voted for a winner. The pumpkins were then transformed in to the winning designs. ?
