Music
Our intent is that children gain a broad and progressive musical education through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We implement opportunities for active music making in and out of school through links with the village hall and visits to the Sage Gateshead, as well as performances and competitions with our school choir. Professional musicians and teachers demonstrate their own enjoyment of music and provide inspiration. Children who have instrumental lessons are invited to use their own instrument during music lessons when creating and performing music. This helps to further develop and extend their ability and inspire other children. The impact will be that our pupils understand the value, importance and opportunities that music can bring for personal achievement and enjoyment, both individually and as part of an ensemble. Our pupils develop an understanding of key composers in history and begin to develop their own preferences, making informed choices about music they listen to. With SEMH concerns being on the rise within children, we recognise the importance of music as a means of self-expression, vehicle for well-being, development of self-confidence and positive shared experience.
Music in the EYFS
Through Expressive Arts, children are taught to sing songs, make music and dance. Children are given opportunities to experiment with ways of changing sound and develop an understanding of pulse rhythm and pitch. Children enjoy listening and responding to different styles of music, learning to sing, joining in with nursery rhymes and action songs which leads to playing classroom instruments and performing for others. Children are also encouraged to use everyday objects to make music and create sound, children enjoy exploring our music wall outdoors and experiment with sound using objects made from different materials such as wood, metal and plastic. Children experiment with water buts, kettles and pans, piping, guttering, bin lids and many different types of beaters.
Music in KS1 & KS2
Our Music curriculum is matched to the needs of our pupils and National Curriculum objectives and shows progressions of skills throughout school. We have close links with Durham Music Service who provide brass and violin tuition within school as well as whole class recorder teaching in year 3. This ensures that all children will have the opportunity to experience learning a musical instrument whilst at Castleside school. KS1 and 2 objectives are broken down in line with the Durham Music overview of progression of skills and lessons complement class topics wherever possible.
